Our Story
In 1988, Pegasus founder Len Sapiro closed his head shop in New Brunswick, NJ and relocated to Woodstock, NY with the intent of applying his retail experience to a new shoe store venture.
The sudden switch from drug paraphernalia and psychedelic posters to Blundstones and Birkenstocks apparently suited him well! In 2002, Pegasus Footwear expanded south to the college town of New Paltz, NY, opening a larger and instantly popular store there that included an entire outlet room. Finally, in 2012, Len opened a third locationβthis time in the lovely historic village of Rhinebeck, NY.
In early March of 2020, exactly at the start of the Covid pandemic, Len sold his company to The Sole Provisions Family Of Stores so that he could enjoy a healthy, relaxed retirement in Hawaii. Thanks to an amazing staff and community, the newly acquired Pegasus stores not only survived Covid but thrived with online and no-contact orders constantly being fulfilled throughout that time.
Fast-forwarding to the present day, all three Pegasus locations have maintained their solid reputation for expert fitting service and the most current comfort-footwear trends in the Hudson Valley, attracting a steady flow of upstate vistors and locals alike. In addition to consistently being voted Best Shoe Store by the readers of Hudson Valley Magazine, the area's largest printed and online news source, Pegasus has also been top-ranked at the national level by the Footwear Insight's Gold Medal Service Awards.

The Sole Provisions story began in 1991 when founder Holden Nagelberg
discovered the world of comfort footwear while working in a family owned orthopedic shoe store in Queens, New York. Seeing how the right pair of shoes could truly improve his clients' lives sparked a lifelong passion. In 1995 Holden became a Certified Pedorthist, and in 1997 he opened the first Sole Provisions store in Huntington, New York.
Today that vision has grown into a family of award winning specialty footwear
stores across the country, with multiple locations per year awarded with Footwear Insight's prestigious Gold Medal Service Award, a national honor given to retailers who provide outstanding customer service and fitting expertise.

One of our most meaningful initiatives is our annual Fight Hunger and Save event, which has raised hundreds of thousands of
dollars for hunger relief organizations local to our individual stores. Another charitable event we are passionate about is our semi-annual NAMI Weekend when we contribute a percentage of our sales to support the National Alliance on Mental Illness and
raise awareness for mental health in our communities.
